| What is MEM-X ? |
MEM-X - Who is it meant for ?Let’s be clear, at the front end: MEM-X is neither an ‘’ageing treatment’’, nor is it a cure for memory loss as such. The memory we’re focusing on, is the « operational » memory because it is the day to day one. If old age, or illness, are not the sole causes for memory troubles, one has to admit that such failures become more frequent and painful as we grow older. Since the sixties, more than half of people complain about poor memory -even though in most instances, it is more commonly the result of a lack of concentration. Thanks to MEM-X, forgetting doesn’t matter, since MEM-X rings and reminds you, at the right time, the forgotten information. MEM-X is not involved in the treatment of a disease nor does it improve the user’s health. But it does help him enjoy a more independent life, with more dignity, overcome his fears and the shame of forgetting. Memory troubles worry their victims. They feel dependent, fragile and humiliated. Millions of people suffer from memory troubles due to a variety of causes, but we ought to have a special thought for the most flagrant victim: a widow, living alone at home. She sinks slowly, loses her rhythms, knows no more if it is either Monday or Tuesday, if it is market day or whether she has taken her medicine. She forgets that her physiotherapist is due any moment now, or that her grand daughter will be coming soon after school, or that today is her son’s Birthday. Millions of women go thru this tragedy…who survive at home thanks to caregivers, neighbours, nurses and above all children who do their best to fill the gap which grows larger day after day. We delay the time for the nursing home – a heartbreak which foretells the last stage. MEM-X was conceived thinking of those women and their caregivers.
MEM-X – What is its “raison d'être” ?It has a very precise reason. « Whilst the user may have human failings –such as lapses of memory - MEM-X has no right to forget whatsoever, but must work, on time, every time and in “real time!” » It must deliver the pre recorded messages at the programmed dates and time. Which messages ? All those that the user may forget, which build up his daily life. To start with, it is essential to set up the day’s rhythms because all days look alike and it is important that, as of the first morning message, the day of the week is announced. MEM-X has a programme for this purpose, because every day is specific. Monday, is the therapist’s day, Tuesday is market day, Wednesday is Lunch with Ava, etc… Should the programme of a given day change, then it must be modified accordingly in the Programmer, otherwise the former programme will repeat itself every week. There are 3 Types of Messages adapted to all kinds of needs, for instance:
Looking into the fridge & write up a check list of purchases, go to market or hairdresser, pick up a child at school, ring the income tax office, take clothes to the Dry Cleaners, etc…The Check List gets longer as time passes by. MEM-X can also be used as a messenger of affection and love.Tokens of tenderness and affection to a grandma for instance from time to time at any time of the day. Why MEM-X? What innovation does it bring, never brought before?2 avancées essentielles: 2 major innovations (Unlike all other devices)MEM-X forewarns that something must be done immediately – i.e. within minutes - and (2) thru a voice message of a known or beloved person: These messages must be regularly recorded, say weekly. They are not exclusive for access to one person only: The eldest daughter, the caregiver, the regular GP, a nurse, children & grand children have access to it. Only the user to whom those messages are addressed is unique. Many methods can obviate memory troubles: Diaries, Check Lists, Post-its!. Experience tells us that these messages, more often than not, are not read, are forgotten, lost or read too late. Other multifunction devices exist, that can record messages, but are much too complex for an elderly person. A very simple device was thus required to deliver those guiding instructions in real time:
